The Oak King artist description:
‘The Oak King’ was inspired by winter solstice/Yule, a traditional pagan holiday celebrated across Europe many years ago on 21 December.
I sketched and designed this piece on the winter solstice and he developed from there. The Oak King is part of a Celtic belief explaining the turning of the seasons. The story goes that the Oak King defeats his brother the Holly King at Yule and takes the thrown, the returning of the sun and crops show his glory. Then the Holly King defeats his brother and this is shown in the cold and darkness returning. I allowed this piece to naturally unfold, beginning painting in two tones of white and burnt umber, and then building glazes in tones of orange and green. This reinforced the joy of the creative process and how it is important to trust and not try to control the outcome. The subtle colours give an earthy yet otherworldly feeling. I incorporated symbols of winter solstice onto his head piece and captured wisdom in his eyes. For me there is something magical about delving into these characters in my art as the seasons change, which can affect us significantly.
